Some new faces are taking part in the Formula 1 race track in Barcelona, Spain, where Poland's Robert Kubica, Estonia's Juri Phipps and Dutchman Nick de Vries will be in the first qualifying experience for the Spanish Grand Prix today, Friday.
The Alfa Romeo team said, yesterday, Thursday, that Kubica will be in the driving seat of the team car "C42" instead of the Chinese Zhou Guanyu, who will return in the second qualifying experience and will be in the rest of the race at the end of the week.
Kubica was the first to drive the team's car in Barcelona tests last March, and his team hopes to obtain high technical proficiency from its driver.
For its part, the Red Bull team confirmed that Formula 2 driver Phipps will drive the car of Mexican Sergio Perez in the training that will last for 60 minutes.
Estonian Phipps, a member of the Red Bull Junior team, is eighth in the Formula 2 Championship.
Williams' English driver Alex Albon will have free time in first qualifying, leaving the field to Formula E champion De Vries.
The Dutch driver, who drives a Mercedes EQ, arrived in Spain after his second Formula E victory of the season in Berlin on Sunday and is a potential candidate for a permanent seat at Williams next season.
Starting in the current 2022 season, Formula 1 regulations require that novice drivers be used at least twice in the first qualifying session.
Ferrari's Charles Leclerc, from the Principality of Monaco, leads the drivers' standings in the championship, ahead of Dutchman Max Verstappen, driver of the Red Bull team, before the Grand Prix in Spain on Sunday.
