German car company Mercedes has announced the expansion of its partnership with the US company Sella for next-generation battery materials and the strengthening of the existing one.
Mercedes said in Stuttgart on Tuesday that the batteries containing silicon anode chemistry produced by Sila are expected to be installed in Mercedes G-Class limousines from the middle of the current decade.
Daimler (which is the name of the group that owned Mercedes before the group was divided into Mercedes-Benz Group and Daimler Trucks) had contributed three years ago to the American company, which is headquartered in Alameda, California.
Mercedes stated that the battery material manufactured by Sela is superior to conventional lithium-ion technology in terms of energy density.
Mercedes has also already contributed to the German-French company (ACC) for battery cells to cover its needs. The giant European Stylantis Group (Peugeot, Opel and Fiat) and the French energy company Total also participate in this company. Mercedes also contributes to the Taiwanese company Prologium for the production of solid-state batteries.
Mercedes announced last year its intention to step up its efforts to build its own electric fleet. The company's work will be directed primarily towards electric driving and by the end of the decade Mercedes will seek to convert its products to fully electric cars wherever "market conditions permit".
